The Story Behind Wonderbird

From Film to Design & Photography

My career began in Wellington’s film industry, where I developed a strong foundation in visual storytelling.

From there, I spent four years working in design studios in New York City, expanding my expertise in branding and visual communication. It was during this time that yoga and meditation became a big part of my life, shaping the way I approach creativity and connection.

When I returned to Wellington, I moved into exhibition and experience design, shaping engaging visual experiences for a variety of audiences.

I later joined the College of Creative Arts at Massey University, where I taught typography, creative-directed at Open Lab (the university’s design studio), and mentored junior designers—helping the next generation of creatives refine their craft and develop their unique voices.

In 2016, I launched my own business, Catherine Adam Photography & Design, to bring my passion for design, photography, and visual storytelling directly to businesses that align with my values. In 2019, I rebranded to Wonderbird, inspired by a client who consistently referred to me by this name. The rebranding allowed me to more closely relate to the audience I had been building and refining since 2016. Since then, I’ve worked with a range of clients, crafting branding and imagery that captures their unique essence and purpose. A highlight of my career was meeting and photographing Dr Jane Goodall during her 2018 and 2019 Wellington tours.

Fine Art Photography – A Personal Passion

Beyond client work, I’ve been passionate about photography since my teenage years, drawn to the way images can tell stories and evoke emotions.

I’m deeply engaged in personal documentary and fine art photography, exploring themes of place, memory, and human connection. I offer a selection of fine art prints that highlight the beauty of nature, wildlife, and New Zealand’s landscapes—capturing powerful yet tranquil moments. Each print invites you to bring a unique perspective into your space, blending artistry with a deep connection to the world around us.

What My Clients Say

Clients often tell me they appreciate my listening skills, communication, professionalism, creativity, and passion. I believe that truly understanding a client’s vision begins with deep listening—honoring their values, their purpose, and the impact they want to create.

My work has been described as engaging, reliable, and exceeding expectations—a reflection of my commitment to thoughtful, high-quality design and imagery. I collaborate with holistic, wellness, and sustainability-focused brands, ensuring that every project aligns with authenticity and meaning, creating visuals that inspire connection and positive change.

“Catherine Adam at Wonderbird is brilliant to work with. She met our needs for designs that were elegant, principled, and ethical. I loved working with her. Our two books, What Makes You Stronger, and, Your Life Your Way, would never have looked so beautiful without her dedication. The branding work she did for my website was fabulous too!”
