It was an honour to again be engaged by the Jane Goodall Institute of New Zealand to photograph a day with Jane in Wellington, ending in the Ballroom at Government House where Dr Jane Goodall and Melanie Vivian (CEO of the Jane Goodall Institute New Zealand) presented the inaugural Jane Goodall Trailblazer Awards to Chlöe Swarbrick and Maha Fier.

A wonderful project working with the lovely team at IYTA (NZ) – International Yoga Teachers Association (NZ). Starting with a photo shoot at their Wellington Teacher Training weekend and the lovely Home of Compassion, next up a gentle rebrand that nods to where they have come from, and then a booklet bringing it all together.

Editorial Design

Alongside Rosie Percival, I had a wonderful time redesigning the Iyengar Yoga Institute of New Zealand's annual yoga journal. We brought energy and life to the redesign, with colour coded sections, bold imagery, clear typography and a spacious layout.

Brand Design / Brand Collateral

Working alongside Celeste Skachill at Open Lab — Japanese Studies Aotearoa New Zealand, was seeking a brand that captured both Japan and Aotearoa New Zealand. For the design we chose to reference the red circle within the Japanese flag and combine this with an abstract representation of New Zealand's iconic Pohutukawa flower. Together they form JSANZ's new unique brand. 

Editorial Magazine Design

75% of waste New Zealanders send to landfill is recyclable or reusable. Rubbish disposal is a mostly private activity, which often happens without thought while the discarded item is immediately forgotten – out of sight, out of mind.

This personal project aims to stimulate thought and dialogue about the often invisible world of rubbish, with the ultimate goal of encouraging more responsible management of individual and collective rubbish disposal and production.

A very special and beautiful project to co-create with Kirstie Cleary of Essensual. Brand design / Brand Photography / Website Design & Build.

A wonderful project to be involved with — the rebranding and new signage system for Waihōanga River Lodge and Retreat. This process began with a very productive workshop to unpack and clarify all Waihōanga's fresh new vision, their understanding of their audience as well as their new mission statement. Logo redesigned, brand photography, new business card and then I designed over 45 new signs (interior and exterior) to help freshen this magical space.

Thank you Andy and Rhian, I loved collaborating with you on this hearty creative process.

'Working with Catherine was a pleasure from the start of brainstorming our new design right through to delivery and execution. She helped us to consider and articulate what our brand was about at its core, as well as how we want to use our branding and under what circumstances. She was then also extremely responsive and thoughtful as we went through an iterative process, including us all discussing paint palettes, walking through mock-ups, and establishing great working relationships with other suppliers recommended by Catherine. We now have a brand that we love, which is suitably versatile to look great on massive entrance signs, digital media, paperwork, and road signs. Editorial Design

Working as creative director and senior designer alongside Anna Brown at Massey University's Open Lab, I had the great pleasure conceptualising and designing this book for artist David Cross.

Each of the thirteen public art projects took place across Tasmania and sought to address the idea of transforming an artwork four times over four weeks. The concept of 'four iterations' is strongly reflected in both the typographical design of the cover as well as within the internal spreads.

I loved designing this wonderful book with Kalos Chan on Illustration. This is Ben Sedley’s second book, with Stuff That Sucks being the first book.

Stuff That Sucks : Accepting what you can't change and committing to what you can, by Ben Sedley.

I thoroughly enjoyed working on the design of this wonderful book aimed at a teenage audience. Chloe Johnston assisted me with design and Kalos Chan worked on the wonderful illustrations.

The Yoga Education in Prisons Trust, NZ, commissioned me to photograph one of the yoga classes that are held regularly at Remutaka Prison. I had never been into a prison before so I was not sure how I would feel once I found myself inside the wire fences. However, being in a yoga class (familiar) and having a photographic focus (again familiar) made me feel very much at ease. 

The challenge of this documentary commission was the requirement that all images were not to identify any of the inmates. No faces, no identifiable tattoos.

Thank you to Atmabhava for welcoming me into his teaching environment and ensuring I was comfortable. And thank you Adhyatma for trusting me to take this job on, a job that means a lot to me. And thank you to the inmates for showing me (and my camera) just how deep and vital your practice of yoga has become.

'We commissioned Catherine to visually document a meditation retreat in which we use art processes, movement and stillness to achieve levels of conscious awareness as stepping stones into meditative experience.

Alamandria: The Art of Self Mastery, Mindfulness & Meditation

Keep the Peace - NZ. The conception of dancer and choreographer Anna Groves ten Broeke — and brought to full fruition so beautifully by all the wonderful souls who turned up to Oriental Bay. Dressed in white, they gradually and silently lined the bay wall — it looked and felt like such graceful magic — for an hour, and meditated with movement. All was accompanied by Rob ten Broeke's beautiful music sounding from the Rotunda. All for the purpose of peace.

I had a wonderful experience photographing a Compassionate Communication, yoga and meditation retreat at Shambhala in Golden Bay. Hosted by Katie Lane, Anna and Rob from Renew.

Space Studio is a new yoga studio in Wellington that has one heck of a spacious and beautiful view! I was commissioned to photograph this fresh new space in action before their opening in February 2018 — teachers teaching, students practicing, the space itself — to provide a full package of images for their new website and printed marketing material, which I also enjoyed designing.

In my client's words: 'Catherine is engaging, professional, wonderful to work with, creative and absolutely passionate about photography. The result for us was a wonderful experience from beginning to end and beautiful photos for our Space Studio website. Catherine worked with a team of teachers and students for half a day and encouraged us all to relax, have fun and do what we love. We couldn't have asked for any more. Mmmmmmm peanut butter! Guess what I had for lunch on this shoot day?! A product shoot for Two Can Peanut Butter, made with children in mind, but equally delicious to the adult palette! I so enjoyed working with the lovely Rosie Percival on this project.

A fun Island Bay, Wellington photoshoot for Essensual’s new website launch.

I had the pleasure of photographing a week-long healing yoga retreat at Tauhara Centre, Acacia Bay, Taupo — Heart of Freedom with Ben Ralston, Kara-Leah Grant and Helen Thomas. 

My job was to capture the essence of the retreat as it unfolded for future marketing. Much gratitude to everyone at this retreat for allowing me and my camera to be so very present.

We engaged Catherine Adam to shoot our first Heart of Freedom Retreat at Tauhara Retreat Centre in Taupo in May of 2016. This week-long retreat was an intimate gathering of people coming together to get to the roots of trauma through a combination of yoga with Kara-Leah Grant and afternoon group work sessions with Ben Ralston.

Prior to the retreat, we'd struggled to describe to people the work we'd be doing. Trauma work? Shadow work? Afternoon group sessions? It was a really hard sell. We knew that we needed to capture some evocative images that could convey what words failed to do. However, we also knew that the retreat was going to be deeply personal work, and incredibly intimate. We needed to find a photographer who could capture the small moments which reveal so much in a sensitive and unobtrusive manner. It was no small ask.

Enter Catherine. Recommended by a mutual friend, I was sold when Catherine and I first spoke on the phone. She was passionate, enthusiastic, excited and also had a nuanced awareness of what was required without needing to have it spelt out. I booked her without even looking at her work based on that interaction. 

Catherine came and participated whole-heartedly while also keeping a photographer's keen eye on every unfolding scene. She knew which moments we wanted captured and over the course of the week nailed everything. She was sensitive, attuned, intuitive and worked without any instruction. She knew what was needed, what she was doing and she just got on and did it.

Post-retreat, Catherine was extraordinarily quick to deliver all the photos and videos in a highly efficient and organised manner. The images themselves... outstanding. So much better than we'd even hoped for. The next retreat will be so much easier to promote because now we can show people what it's all about.

I highly recommend Catherine for any photographic assignment, especially one that requires a great degree of sensitivity and understanding.
